Aboard the Chanel 2023 Cruise

In 1919, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel presented the very first cruise collection. It was a collection outside the seasonal fashion schedule designed for fabulous women who would escape the city for Chanel’s beloved Biarritz beaches. Years later in 1983, Karl Lagerfeld would continue Chanel’s tradition. He designed a collection for wealthy European women whom would travel to warmer places during the cold winter months. Consequently, these collections were sold in stores between November and July.

Monte-Carlo

Chanel’s 2023 cruise collection is a true homage to the brand’s former creative director Karl Lagerfeld. The collection celebrates Monte-Carlo and the many happy moments Viard spend there with Lagerfeld. Monte-Carlo is a place known for its many casinos, beaches and celebrity inhabitants. Each year the city draws many fabulous spectators for the a variety of events such as the Grand Prix Formula 1 of Monaco, the Rally of Monte Carlo, boxing matches and fashion shows. It therefore is no surprise that Sofia Coppola once described it as “noisy, glamorous, exciting!”

Not only did Karl Lagerfeld adore Monte-carlo he would visit each year to attend the Bal de la Rose with princesses Caroline and Charlotte.  While he was there, he’d stay at the extraordinary La Vigie, a gorgeous Belle Époque villa overlooking the ocean. Viard’s cruise collection embodies all these aspects of Monte-Carlo through sequinned driver’s overalls, silk dresses printed with starter flag and boxer styled shorts. As always Viard makes an expert contemporary interpretation whilst honouring the heritage that is there!
