What you need to know about collagen and retinol

Here’s what you need to know about including collagen and retinol into your daily skincare routine

Collagen and retinol have gained significant popularity over the past year or so. Skincare brands are increasingly adding these ingredients into their products. Whilst more and more people are introducing them into their daily skincare routine. So here’s everything you need to know about collagen and retinol and how to include it into your own daily skincare routine.

Why you should use collagen and retinol

Collagen is a protein that our body naturally creates. One of its main roles is to give structure, strength and elasticity to our skin. Hence why it is a common ingredient in skincare products. As you grow older your body starts producing less collagen. Your existing collagen also starts to break down at a faster pace. Consequently, your skin will start to wrinkle, sag and you will experience hallowing around your eyes and face. When using skincare products or food supplements that contain collagen, you help your body to maintain its collagen levels. This in turn will help keep your skin’s elasticity.

Now, what about retinol? Easy, retinol is a form of vitamin A that stimulates your body’s skin cell production including its collagen production. By doing so it helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles and it gives your skin a fresher, plump appearance.

How I use collagen and retinol in my daily skincare routine

Since my 30th birthday last year, I have been looking for a way to adjust my routine to my skin’s new needs. Recently, I have found the perfect answer in Lumene’s Nordic Bloom collection.

The face and eye serums contain Lumene’s patented Nordic Lingonberry extract, hyaluronic acid and a vegan collagen. Whilst the day and night creams are infused with the innovative Nordic Berry Pre-Retinol complex as well as the Nordic Lingonberry extract. Lumene’s Nordic Bloom products help reduce any lines, restore the youthful bounce of the skin under my eyes and leave my skin looking fresh and plump.

Here’s my

Daily skincare routine

I start my skincare routine with cleansing and toning my skin. Using a toner prepares your skin to absorb your skincare products better. Next, I use the Lumene Vegan Collagen Eye serum under my eyes to brighten my look. After that I use apply 2-3 drops of the Lumene Vegan Collagen Essence all over my face and neck. It is so important to always include your neck and décolletage whilst applying skincare. Finally, I use the Lumene Anti-Wrinkle & Firm day Cream SPF 30 in the morning. In the evening I end my routine with the Lumene Anti-Wrinkle & Revitalize Overnight Balm

Twice a week I exchange the serums with more intense retinol products in the evening. The retinol products I use for that are the Verso Super Eye Serum with retinol 8 and the Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3.

Why you should always apply your serum before cream

A serum holds effective active skincare ingredients in a concentrated form. You can use a serum day and/or night. Choose your serum based on your skin’s needs whether this is to provide radiance, hydrate, revitalise, reduce wrinkles or work anti-ageing. It is important to apply your day and/or night cream after your serum as it locks the serum and its skin enhancing qualities into the skin. Moreover, the serum will enhance the absorption of the cream into your skin.

Why retinol is best used at night

Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight and therefore it is best incorporated into your night time routine. Should you, however, use it in your morning routine make sure to use sufficient sunscreen or try to avoid the sun.

Those are the most important things you need to know about collagen and retinol. From the skin enhancing qualities they provide to the do’s and don’ts of using them.
